ControlFix 3 & 4 Gang Cavity Mount Frame: A Free Design for Decora and NEMA WD-6 Panels

Most of the 730design range solves a mounting problem specific to one region. This one runs the other way - a very Australian problem, wrapped inside a North American standard.

Where it comes from

Control4, Crestron, Dynalite, Lutron, and Savant all build control panels and keypads to NEMA WD-6 multi-gang mounting spacing, in a Decora-compatible faceplate format. In the US, the hardware to mount that format is everywhere. In Australia, 1-gang and 2-gang imported mounts are easy enough to source, and reasonably priced. Past that, into 3-gang or more, good options become harder to find - installers are often left improvising on site.

For the format itself, see our piece on what Decora actually is and how it relates to NEMA spacing.

How it works

The ControlFix 3 & 4 Gang Cavity Mount Frame is a direct cavity-mount frame: the rear flange bears against the back of the plasterboard, and the frame is held securely in position the moment the panel is fitted. No back box, no external hardware - the panel itself clamps the frame in place.

It's available in two native sizes, 3-gang and 4-gang. Cut marks allow either size to be trimmed down to 2-gang or 1-gang. Multiple frames can also be installed side by side to accommodate larger multi-gang runs, maintaining precise NEMA gang-to-gang spacing across the join, with no connecting hardware required.

Specifications

  • Cutout: 92 x 144mm / 3 5/8 x 5 11/16in (3-Gang), 92 x 190mm / 3 5/8 x 7 1/2in (4-Gang)
  • Fixing variants included: self-tap for a 6g screw, through-hole for an M3 brass-embedded thread, through-hole for a 6-32 UNC brass-embedded thread
  • SELV mounting accessory, not an electrical enclosure

System compatibility

Built for standard NEMA WD-6 (46.02mm / 1 13/16in module spacing) low-voltage backless applications. The 3-Gang frame fits any device built to 1, 2, or 3-gang NEMA WD-6 spacing; the 4-Gang frame fits 1, 2, 3, or 4-gang.

Compatible with Control4 Decora Wired Keypads, Crestron Cameo and Horizon, Dynalite DirectSet (DSxA) and PDTS Touchscreen, Lutron Palladiom and seeTouch (QS-bus, low-voltage), Savant Echo and Metropolitan (WPK/WIK series, 24V DC), Pharos TPS8 and XPT8 Express, ETC Mosaic M-TS8, ETC Unison Echo Inspire, RTI in-wall keypads, and any standard Decora faceplate device. Full compatibility and affiliation details are on our FAQ page.

Decora is a North American faceplate standard, distinct from the AU, UK/Type 86, and EU DIN conventions the rest of the 730design range is built to - see our wall box standards reference for how these compare.

Why it's free

Once the form was settled, it could be costed for manufacture and sale. The economics didn't line up - producing this at small scale would mean pricing it above what the market values it at, or what we'd want to pay for it ourselves. Rather than sit on a design we think is genuinely useful, we're making it available for anyone to use.

The files are free, for personal use and individual commercial installation work. Licensing and ordering questions are covered on our FAQ, or get in touch directly.

Looking to manufacture or sell at volume, or want a finished, ready-to-install part instead of printing it yourself? Get in touch at studio@730design.au.
