Wall Box and Fixing Standards Around the World: A Reference

Designing hardware that bridges international control panel formats means confronting a fact that isn't obvious until you're deep into it: there is no single global standard for how a control panel mounts to a wall. Four major regions run on four different sets of numbers - and for SELV digital control panels specifically, even that's generous. Most of these standards were written for traditional mains-connected wiring accessories, not extra-low-voltage touchscreens and keypads. In practice, the industry works to whichever electrical accessory standard sits geometrically closest, because a purpose-built one for this category of hardware often doesn't exist.

QUICK ANSWER: Wall box fixing spacing varies by region - UK/Type 86 uses 60.3mm (BS 4662/5733), Continental Europe uses 60.0mm (DIN 49073), North America uses 83.3mm (NEMA WD 6), and Australia/NZ uses 84.0mm as informal manufacturer convention, with no citable national standard. None of these were designed with SELV digital control panels in mind, which is why bridging hardware between regions has to be purpose-built.

This represents the best information we've been able to source and verify at time of writing. Standards are periodically revised, and this should be treated as guidance rather than a substitute for checking the current, specific standard applicable to your project and region.

Why Doesn't Australia Have a Citable Wall Box Standard?

The Australian/NZ figure above looks different from the others on purpose. AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) governs general electrical installation safety, not exact wall box dimensions or fixing spacing. There's no single Australian or New Zealand product standard that legislates 84.0mm as a mandate - it's a long-standing, strictly-followed manufacturer convention, implemented consistently by Clipsal/Schneider Electric, Hager, PDL and others, that exists to keep flush boxes and grid plates mechanically interchangeable across brands. It works reliably in practice. It's just not written down anywhere as law.

How Does Type 86 Relate to the European DIN Standard?

Type 86 (60.3mm fixing centres) and the Continental European DIN standard (60.0mm) are closely related, and the small difference between them sits comfortably within standard fixing tolerance. 730design hardware is built to the 60.3mm Type 86 standard and works reliably with panels specified to either. Why Are Fixing Threads the Bigger Risk?

The bigger risk sits at the fastener level, not the fixing centre. M3.5 (ISO 261/262, 0.6mm pitch) and 6-32 UNC (ASME B1.1, roughly 0.794mm pitch) have almost identical outer diameters - 3.5mm versus 3.505mm - and look the same to the eye. The pitch is completely different, and forcing one into the other's tapped hole strips the thread within a turn or two. Full detail in Why M3.5?

Where This Actually Mattered

A few places these numbers weren't just background reading:

Building ControlFix, for the Australian market. The Type 86 standard doesn't exist in Australian trade hardware at all - the 84.0mm AU spacing has no overlap with 60.3mm, and there was no local equivalent to fall back on. That gap is the entire reason ControlFix exists.

Building ControlFix NA 2-Gang. Ideally, this would fit the most common US wall box - a single-gang NEMA box. But Type 86's 60.3mm fixing spacing is wider than a standard single-gang box can accommodate, so a 2-gang box became the practical minimum. The 83.3mm NEMA fixing spacing and Type 86's 60.3mm aren't just different numbers, they're different box shapes entirely - rectangular versus what a Type 86 panel expects. A 2-gang box being wider than a single-gang, but still leaving a gap around a square Euro panel, is a direct consequence of these standards never being designed with each other in mind.

Sourcing fixing screws. Assuming "a 3.5mm screw is a 3.5mm screw" is the single easiest mistake to make here, and the one most likely to cause a stripped thread on site rather than in a spec sheet.

None of these standards were built with SELV digital control panels in mind, which is exactly why hardware bridging them has to be purpose-built rather than adapted.
