Why ControlBase Exists: Taking Control Panels Off the Wall

Control panels have changed. What used to be a light switch has become a multi-page interface - scenes, presets, system control, integration with other technologies - often doing far more than its fixed position on the wall would suggest.
The wall still makes sense from an installation standpoint. Fixed location, tied to infrastructure, easy to standardise. But it's worth asking whether that's still the right place for the interaction to happen.
In entertainment and technical production, this problem was solved differently. Control positions are built around the operator - screens, surfaces, and interfaces arranged at the point of use, not fixed to a wall because that's where the cable run happened to land. Architectural control hasn't caught up to the same idea, even though the underlying technology already supports it. Digital control systems are networked. The interface is flexible. The only thing keeping the panel on the wall is convention and cable management, not a technical constraint.
Where the brief started
The specific situation that brought this into focus was product demonstration - showing a high-value control interface to a client. A well-engineered panel, representing the quality of the whole system, would come off the wall for the presentation and end up sitting unevenly on a table: cables exposed, resting against whatever was nearby. It worked, technically. But it didn't reflect the quality of the system behind it.
ControlBase started as a solution to exactly that: a demonstration tool, built to present a specific panel properly in a client environment, without carrying a piece of wall in with you.
The original brief was narrow. Feedback from early use pointed somewhere broader - the problem wasn't specific to one panel or one system, it showed up consistently across boardrooms, reception desks, workstations, and bedside tables. The demonstration tool became the product.
What ControlBase does today
ControlBase is a desktop mounting platform. Each bracket in the ControlBase range is precision-matched to a specific panel - width follows the panel's face width, and fixing centres match the manufacturer's published specification, confirmed against physical dimensions rather than adapted from something generic. The panel stays live on its native network, in its native system. ControlBase changes where it sits, not how it operates.
Every bracket includes a weighted base with a permanently bonded internal steel ballast plate, keeping the centre of gravity low and central for stable single-handed interaction. Fixing points use embedded brass threads, rated for repeat removal and reinstallation across the product's lifecycle.
